Local Anton Weekly Newspaper
Publishes Misinformed Editorial on Sharia Law

Muslim Attorney Responds, but her Rebuttal is not Printed

Bob McMillan, columnist for Anton News, published an October 14th, 2011 Opinion column about the Saudi Arabia's recent decision to allow women to vote as well as the incident in which a Saudi woman was sentenced to ten lashes with a whip for driving a car.  McMillan ascribes the prohibition against women driving, as well as other discrimination against women, to Islam's Sharia Law.

Engy Abdelkader, an American Muslim attorney and activist promoting the rights of Muslim women globally, wrote an eloquent response demonstrating that the anti-woman legislation McMillan opposes "is not related to Sharia but rather patriarchal custom."

TIA-LI regrets that Anton Newspaper chose not to publish Abdelkader's response and clarify the situation.  Columns such as McMillan's promote the irrational anti-Muslim fear which many in this nation suffer.
