Supreme Court Nomination:  On May 17th, the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism and the United Methodist Church - General Board of Church and Society hosted a conference call for religious leaders to learn from leading experts about Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan and the policy issues that will be the focus of the debate over her confirmation.

Religions for Peace Hold Onto Hope DVD: Rajinderjit Singh and “Religions for Peace Long Island” hosted a showing of documentary “Hold Onto Hope, about Immaculee Ilibagiza, a survivor of the 1994 Rwanda genocide. There was a discussion following the documentary.
  The Religions for Peace – Long Island chapter hosts a grassroots program to make Long Island women aware of what is happening to women all over the world.
 
 
Rethink Afghanistan at Huntington Cinema: Rich sent message advising Kick Kopp that we had voted to co-sponsor the June 2nd showing of this documentary during our April 22nd meeting. For more details, visit www.cinemaartscentre.org and scroll down to “Rethink Afghanistan.”
 
Hate Crimes Bill:  Albany: A09220 would allow court to require that, as part of sentence, person may be compelled to complete training or counseling directed at hate crime prevention.
 
Arizona Immigration Law: The Boston Globe reported on May 1st that the Major League Baseball players union issued a statement condemning Arizona's new law.
 
Torture Awareness Month:  June is Torture Awareness Month.  The National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) reminds us that June 26th is United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.  NRCAT encourages congregations and people of faith to focus on (1) passing federal legislation granting the Red Cross access to all detainees in U.S. custody; and (2) securing a comprehensive investigation into the use of torture by the U.S. since 9/11/01.
