RALLY AT FINAL PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

The Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives reports that close to 1,000 people brought their voices to Hofstra Wednesday afternoon, October 15th, prior to the presidential debate to tell the candidates to end the war, restore the Constitution and to fund social programs. In addition, close to 3,000 petition signatures were sent to the Obama & McCain campaigns proclaiming the same agenda. The crowd listened to numerous rousing speakers from various progressive organizations supporting that agenda. We were moved as always listening to the inspiring words of our local TIA Chairman, Rev. Mark Lukens. Click here for photos of this event.

Later that evening, a group of soldiers from Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) were confronted by mounted police as they tried to bring veterans’ voices to the Presidential debate. Kristofer Goldsmith of IVAW reports that “a peaceful protest outside the third Presidential Debate at Hofstra University on Long Island was met with violence and misconduct by police.” Click here for Kris’ full report.

The LI Alliance and other organizations (NYCLU, Pax Christi LI, Veterans for Peace) have sent letters to Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey calling for an investigation of the actions by the Nassau County Police.

In addition, Newsday published a report about the rally. Click here to read the Newsday article, which is titled NYCLU seeks probe into protest melee at Hofstra debate.
